Amines

Today we started amines and the major focus was on basicity. At the beginning there was some material on nomenclature but most of the lecture dealt with understanding the relative basicity of different amines. Specifically, aliphatic amines are more basic than aromatic amines -- this is seen by comparing the pKa values of the conjugate acids. Conjugate acids of aromatic amines are more acidic (lower pKa values) than CAs of aliphatic amines, therefore the aromatic amines themselves are weaker bases than the aliphatic amines. We also looked at how to change the basicity of aromatic amines by attaching electron-donating groups (increased basicity) and electron-withdrawing groups (decreased basicity). We used resonance to make this determination.

The class also voted on favorite jack-o-lanterns and made very poor choices.
